Adult lesson FAQs
No — Opus 1 teaches adults of every age, and many of our adult students start in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. Adults often progress faster than they expect because they bring focus, patience, and clear personal goals to each lesson. There is no upper age limit and no prior experience required.
Absolutely. Adults often progress faster than they expect because they practice with intention and bring clear goals to every lesson. Beyond the music itself, regular practice is a proven way to reduce stress, sharpen focus and memory, and build a rewarding creative habit. At Opus 1 there's no upper age limit and no prior experience required — many of our adult students started as complete beginners and now play for their own enjoyment, with family, or in community groups.
Yes. A large share of our adult students have never played an instrument before. Lessons start with the fundamentals at a comfortable pace, and your teacher builds each lesson around your goals — whether that's reading music, playing songs you love, or simply enjoying a new creative outlet.
Adult lessons use the same monthly membership tuition as all private lessons — $265 to $595 per month for one weekly lesson, depending on lesson length and teacher level (Standard, Senior, or Master). Adult lessons are 45 or 60 minutes, so an adult trial lesson is $35 for 45 minutes or $45 for 60 minutes. Tuition is a flat amount each month, including months with five lessons, and there is no annual contract.
Yes. Opus 1 operates seven days a week year-round, with weekday evening and weekend availability that works well for adults balancing work and family. You hold one consistent weekly time slot, and our full-time front-desk staff helps you find a teacher and a time that fits your schedule.
Never required. Recitals are optional. Some adults love the goal of performing three times a year; others prefer to keep lessons purely for personal enjoyment. Your teacher follows your lead.
Adults can take private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, and ukulele at our Palo Alto and Mountain View campuses, taught by university-trained teachers. You can switch focus or add an instrument at any time.
Both. Most adults choose private one-on-one lessons because the pace and repertoire adapt entirely to them — searching for piano classes for adults or violin classes for adults will usually lead you to exactly this format. Opus 1 also offers group options for adults, including choir, so you can combine a weekly private lesson with ensemble singing or join a group on its own.
